Melexis Launches Coreless Current Sensor MLX91235 for High-Current Measurement

Post on November 23, 2024

Melexis, a global microelectronics leader, has introduced the MLX91235, a coreless current sensor chip designed to accurately measure high currents flowing through PCB traces and busbars. Targeted at automotive and alternative mobility applications, the sensor supports use cases such as inverters, battery management systems (BMS), and low-voltage DC-DC converters.

Compact Design for EVs

The MLX91235 addresses the challenges of reducing size and weight in modern electric vehicle (EV) power electronics. Its coreless design eliminates the hysteresis errors of traditional current sensors, resulting in a more compact solution. Utilizing differential magnetic field measurement between its two internal sensing elements, it ensures high precision while rejecting stray magnetic fields. With a 500kHz bandwidth and a 2μs response time, it excels in high-speed applications like motor control and converters.

Digital Architecture and Accuracy

Equipped with an advanced digital architecture, the MLX91235 enhances accuracy and simplifies system integration. Unlike analog solutions, its digital compensation provides smoother, more precise data output by handling non-linearities more effectively. The fully digital temperature compensation ensures consistent accuracy across the entire operating range.

Open-Loop Calibration via SPI

The sensor enables intuitive calibration through an SPI interface, allowing seamless integration with any microcontroller. Digital gain adjustments can be made effortlessly, offering greater flexibility compared to analog coreless sensors.

Overcurrent Detection and Temperature Monitoring

The MLX91235 features a 16-bit overcurrent detection (OCD) system with configurable thresholds and a detection time as low as 2μs. Anti-false-trigger strategies improve reliability in EMC-challenged environments. Additionally, its 10-bit temperature feedback mechanism provides precise thermal readings via the SPI interface.

Functional Safety and Diagnostics

Compliant with ISO 26262 ASIL B standards, the MLX91235 integrates a comprehensive self-diagnostic function. This feature monitors critical parameters like temperature, undervoltage, and mechanical stress, covering the entire signal chain from sensor to MCU.

Applications and Availability

Ideal for automotive and industrial systems, the MLX91235 supports applications like inverters, chargers, EHCs, and intelligent thermal fuses. Engineering samples and the DVK91235 development kit are available now, with full certification expected by mid-2025.
