Memory controller connectors|PC Card Sockets

Memory cards are small solid-state secondary storage devices that can be used to expand the storage capacity of electronic devices. Memory cards have gained huge popularity through the years due to their large storage capacities, portability, reliability, and robust nature. As a result, most of the electronic devices, be it smartphones, tablets, or laptops, are coming with memory card compatibility in one form or another. Memory controllers embedded in memory cards are also called flash memory controllers.

In order to support memory cards, a device must have an essential hardware component called memory connectors. Memory card connectors serve as housing for the memory card, and also acts as an interface between the memory card and the rest of the components. Memory card connectors comprise of insulating grooves inside the housing where the conductive terminals are seated, which will make the contact with the conductive portions of the memory card. The memory connector is mounted on the circuit board of the device by soldering the case terminals on it. Then, the conducting terminals are also soldered onto the board, establishing required connections on the board.

Memory card connectors come in a variety of sizes and designs. On the basis of the size and type of storage cards that they support, the most common memory connectors are those for SD cards, micro SD cards, smart cards, SIM cards, micro-SIM cards, and NANO sim cards.

There are mainly three types of memory connectors based on the way the cards are inserted into and held by them:
