Melexis has released the MLX92352, a versatile programmable 3-axis latch and switch chip for relative position and velocity sensing applications. The device has a flexible magnetic design that supports dual output regardless of spacing, and the output can be set to speed, pulse or direction. With its superior EMC and ESD performance, this PCB-free device saves space and total module costs for automotive and industrial applications.

The MLX92351 (pre-programmed) and MLX92352 (programmable) are orthogonal output devices that accurately locate the speed and direction of the motor system. The 90° phase shift between the two outputs enables the device to be independent of spacing and gaps, making magnetic design easier. The MLX92352 and MLX92351 achieve greater flexibility by output a combination of any two terms in the X, Y, and Z magnetic axes (representing speed, pulse, or direction). Magnetic thresholds range from ±0.5mT to ±40mT to achieve industry-leading magnetic accuracy.

Using Melexis' Silicon on Insulator (SOI) technology, the series of magnetic latches and switching chips deliver outstanding performance: 15kV HBM ESD, 8kV system ESD and high EMC robustness. This PCB-free solution saves space and cost, and the single-chip solution of DC motor counting simplifies the design. The operating voltage range of MLX92352 and MLX92351 is 2.7V to 60V at junction temperature of 175℃. Equally important, the final state feedback function at startup ensures the continuous and stable operation of the motor system.

With programmable EEPROM and flexible setting of the output of three axes, MLX92352 can achieve rich functions, suitable for a variety of applications: Linear speed and direction control (power lift gate, power module shut-off), incremental rotation coding (step frequency sensor, fan and pump motor indexing for e-bikes), bilinear position detection (piston and rod), and angular position detection (knob, single-key shuttle). The device is fully competent for the above applications.

"The MLX92351 and MLX92352 are extremely flexible and demonstrate their advantages in a large number of applications. By reusing the same solution across all platforms, customers can not only complete development faster, but also reduce engineering effort." "Said Dieter Verstreken, global marketing manager for location sensor chips at Melexis. "Another major advantage of these magnetic sensor chips is their compact design, which allows for easy integration. With outstanding EMC and ESD performance, they are one of the few standalone switchgear devices on the market that can handle the 2.7V to 60V voltage range."
