Microchip has announced expansion of its ultra-low-power (XLP) PI microcontroller (MCU) portfolio. Features of the new PIC24F GB4 family include an integrated hardware encryption engine with OTP and key RAM options for secure key storage, up to 256KB of flash memory, and a direct driver (64-pin, 100-pin) for segmented LCD displays Pin or 121 pin) package. Dual-partition flash memory with real-time update capability allows the device to accommodate two independent software applications and allows simultaneous programming of one partition while executing application code from another partition. These advanced features make the PIC24F GB4 series ideal for designers of industrial, computer, medical / fitness and portable applications that require secure data transmission and storage and long battery life. In order to protect embedded data, a number of Microchip Core Independent Peripherals (CIP) running without a CPU are integrated into the PIC24F GB4 family. Full-featured hardware encryption engine, including support for AES, DES, and 3DES standards, reduces software overhead, reduces power consumption, and enables faster throughput. The random number generator is used to generate random keys for data encryption, decryption and authentication, thus achieving a higher level of security. To provide additional protection, the series offers the flexibility to choose from two encryption key storage options: one-time programmable (OTP) to prevent overwriting of the key, or to erase the key when power is lost Key RAM. To allow the application's real-time clock to continue to run after the main power is disconnected, the VBAT pin can be used to provide backup power. The segmented LCD display driver reduces system components and provides the ability to directly drive up to 512 segments, enabling more informative and flexible displays, including descriptive icons and scrolling displays. Microchip's world-class development tool standard kit supports the PIC24F GB4 family, including the PIC24FJ256GB410 plug-in module (MA240038) for the Explorer 16 Development Board (DM240001). Both USB (PIC24FJXXXGB4XX) and USB (PIC24FJXXXGA4XX) offer product variants.
