SSDS can now be used in very large data centers

    KIOXIA Europe now offers the 9.5mm XD6 series enterprise and Data Center standard Shape factor (EDSFF) E1. S Data center SSDS. Launched in late 2020, the drive is the first EDSFF E1. According to the performance, power consumption, and thermal power consumption requirements of the OCP NVMe Cloud SSD Specification, this Specification provides special requirements for mass applications.

    SSDS are used to optimize system density, efficiency, and management. EDSFF Alliance replaces M.2 shape factor devices through OCP NVMe Cloud SSD specifications, providing increased density, reliability, performance, and thermal management with smaller form factor devices. It can also be hot-pluggable to increase serviceability -- another advantage of m.2.

    The series is powered by KIOXIA BiCS FLASH 3D FLASH with 1DWPD durability and NVMe 1.3c and PCIe 4.0 specifications with capacities of 1.92TB and 3.84TB, respectively. A TCG-OPal 2.0 encryption option is also provided.

    Drives created according to the OCP NVMe Cloud SSD specification are available for the new OCP Yosemite V3 platform developed by Meta (formerly Facebook). EDSFF E1.s is targeted for large-scale deployment in very large data centers because of its ability to scale in terms of power, capacity, performance and heat dissipation.

    Jason Adrian, senior director of platform architecture for Microsoft's Azure said:"Microsoft and the OCP Storage Working Group demonstrate open collaboration across industries that can bring together hyperscalers, system designers and SSD vendors around next-generation storage form factors,"The EDSFF E1.S form factor is the future of flash storage in hyperscale data centers, including the Azure platform. Solid-state drives designed to the OCP NVMe Cloud SSD specification, such as the KIOXIA XD6 series, will power the next generation of EDSFF E1.s servers."
