Modular phones are certainly a popular idea right now, even if they are currently failing to deliver on their promises. However, suggestions have been made about what happens when they are no longer needed: they can simply slide together to form a supercomputer.
This is the conceptual design behind the modular smartphone Puzzlephone. The idea is simple: as the processor unit in the phone becomes too slow to be housed separately in a mobile device, they can be combined (simple sliding into a scalable supercomputer unit) to create a Computationally supported equipment at an affordable price. Indeed, the concept even shows that old battery cells can also be used in modular supercomputers, presumably to make the device mobile, or at least to perform operations with power off. Although the proposed unit accepts only a few processor units, the concept also illustrates that supercomputer units themselves can be stacked together.
Of course, this is just a concept. But it's a good idea, at least, it's good to see that manufacturers of modular phones are thinking about how to make their hardware sustainable, not just one-time use. [Puzzle by phone]
